Innovating Clean Cooking Technologies

Envirofit International is a social enterprise that innovates energy products and services that deliver social, environmental and economic impacts. With headquarters in the USA and production and distribution centres across East & West Africa, Asia, and Latin America, Envirofit has developed a product line of clean cooking technologies that reduce fuel use, smoke, and toxic emissions.

Close to 4.3 million people die each year from illnesses attributed to Household Air Pollution from cooking over open fires and on traditional stoves. A majority of these deaths are women and children. In addition to being a health hazard, open fires and traditional cooking methods are an economic burden for households requiring up to 1/3 of their income for fuel. Environmentally, they increase deforestation and are a leading cause of C02 and black carbon emissions, which exacerbate climate change.

To combat Household Air Pollution and make cooking safer for families, Envirofit creates access to durable and affordable cooking solutions. Envirofit has designed aspirational products and services for families as they climb the energy ladder from wood to charcoal to LPG.  In 2017, Envirofit launched SmartGas, a new technology and service offering that enables families to pay-as-they-cook.

In 2012, Envirofit pioneered a Women’s Empowerment Program to incentivize women to have greater participation in the sales of clean cookstoves . Though the field had been dominated by men, the Envirofit Women’s Empowerment Program was founded on the belief that women, as primary users of cookstoves, must be involved in their design and distribution for stoves to be adopted and for women’s needs to be fully met. Envirofit conducted a study in partnership with Johns Hopkins School of Public Health to demonstrate the business case for investing in women. The study demonstrated that if given empowerment training, women could outsell men 3-to-1. Today Envirofit’s direct sales force and customer care team is led by women.

“I used to spend $4.20 every week on firewood but now since I bought the SmartSaver Wood Stove, I only use $1.70 and I can use my savings to supplement the school fees for my children.” —Mary, Burkino Faso
