Collaborating for Impact: A Wrap-Up of the wPOWER Partner Event

The wPOWER Annual Partner Event “Collaborating for Impact: Capturing Insights and Highlighting Best Practice”, held on December 6, 2017 came at a time when there is a greater emphasis and recognition on designing gender-sensitive programs across the energy supply chain.

However, these programs are often bereft of knowledge on best practices available on the ground. It is with this in mind that wPOWER created eight main principles for best practices for effective approaches to clean energy entrepreneurship. These include – Focus on Women, Community Presence, Product Availability, Quality Certified Products, Access to Finance, Coaching & Mentorship, Women’s Networks and Technology Innovations. These success principles are key for organizations in the business of accelerating energy access to ensure success in the sector.

wPOWER Best Practice Principles that underscore success in the clean energy entrepreneurship

Delivered through rich partner discussions and a financing workshop, these principles underpinned the conversation at the event.

Linda Davis, PhD, Strategic Partnerships Manager at wPOWER said: “There is little doubt that energy poverty is one of the most important challenges facing women in the 21st women century, yet women are the primary users and often producers of energy and without their direct involvement, clean energy technologies, are at risk of not reaching their intended population.”

Binagwaho Gakunju, EU Project Coordinator, SOLARKIOSK, a partner of wPOWER said: “Last-mile distribution of clean energy products and services to rural, unserved markets can be a lonely and demanding work. SOLARKIOSK is fortunate to be a part of the wPOWER platform to ​showcase our commitment to building partnerships with women to achieve universal access to clean and affordable energy for all, but most importantly, to share experiences and best practices with a wide variety of partners in this group. We look forward to leveraging on the momentum created by the annual partner gathering to create more linkages to collaborate for impact going into 2018, and are continuously grateful for the support provided by wPOWER to our efforts.”

The event was anchored on the participation of wPOWER partners comprising of two moderated discussions where the partners highlighted their successes, challenges, and insights on how they are boosting the role of women across the clean energy value chain. The second half of the event focused on how appropriate financing could be accessed to achieve scale. This segment gave the partners an opportunity to share their financing challenges while learning the principles of fundraising best practice from experts.

The conference brought together 15 wPOWER partners attracting 41 participants from governments, academics, civil society, and the private sector.
